Few athletes can compete at the Division 1 level; even fewer make an impact as a true freshman. Devin Nuñez helped lead Nebraska to a Big Ten Championship and the NCAA College World Series. 

Navasota FFA member, D’Lynn Robbins received her Lonestar Degree July 2, at the 97th Texas FFA State Convention in Fort Worth. 

Anderson Baptist Church sent two groups to Honduras for their annual mission trip. The second group is a medical team that will assist in the community of El Naranjal.

Sports

Grimes County Little League sent five teams to compete in all stars with the minor league baseball team clinching a District 13 Championship and advancing to the Texas East Section 1 Little League tournament. 

Anderson–Shiro Lady Owl sluggers, senior Jade Buchanan and sophomore Leilani Tagudin, earned Texas Sports Writers Association All State honorable mention honors. Buchanan made the team as a third baseman and Tagudin as a utility player. 

 

Anderson–Shiro head baseball coach, Robert Jackson, was recognized as the 3A Region 5 Head Coach of the Year. Jackson coached the Owls to the Regional Finals where they dropped their series to state finalist Thrall.  

Multiple Anderson–Shiro students attended the Owl basketball camp where they had fun learning valuable skills from the high school basketball coaches including Randy Foy, Robert Weber and Lance Schroeder.

I am a 72-year-old elementary teacher who still teaches three days a week in a Christian school. I teach second grade girls, among others and therein lies the foundation of this soul-searching journal entry. Even though I am not from the Kerrville area, I have visited Hunt, TX several times.  

Can you be proud, but not prideful? Looking back at my time at The Nehemiah Center of Navasota the memories come flooding in and the sum of it all makes me feel enormously proud of all we accomplished. I owe all thanks to God who was with us every step of the way – especially when we didn’t know which way to turn. 

The passage of the state’s first voucher program means homeschool families in Texas will soon be eligible for up to $2,000 to use toward educational costs such as tutoring or curriculum. From 500,000 to 600,000 Texas children are homeschooled — between 8% and 10% of all school-age children, the Houston Chronicle reported.  

Obituaries

Margaret Elaine Finke, 76, of Navasota, Texas passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in College Station, surrounded by her beloved family. Visitation with family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Nobles Funeral Chapel. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at Salem Lutheran Church in Whitehall, Texas, with interment following in the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pastor Corey Christians is the officiant. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel. 

Don Lewis Slaton was born in Navasota on April 14, 1938, to TJ Slaton and Lyndle Virgina Floyd Slaton.  

Lori Lynn Lord, 64, of Navasota, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2025, in Houston. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 20, and her Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., both at Nobles Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in Stoneham Cemetery. Services are in the care of Nobles Funeral Chapel. 

Curtis Arvel Luthe, Sr., 74, was born in Houston August 23, 1950 and went to meet his Lord and Savior on May 10, 2025 in Navasota at his home the way he wanted.
